Take good care of your vision, here are some steps you can take to keep your eyes healthy:
- Good nutrition: For your eye health, eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens like kale and spinach. Antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins A, E, and C have been found to be particularly important for eye health. Consider replacing some red meat with eggs and nuts to increase lutein, an anti-oxidant which may be particularly beneficial to eye health.
- Physical exercise: Aerobic exercise such as walking, running, swimming, dancing, and cycling can reduce pressure inside the eyes and improve blood flow to the retina and optic nerve. Recent research suggests that regular exercise can cut the risk of age-related eye diseases by as much as 70%.
- Protection from the sun: To protect the eyes from excess sunlight and UV rays which can cause considerable damage to vision, you need to make sure your glasses and lenses have 100% UV ray protection. Most doctors suggest their patients use glasses and lenses with UV 400 protection. This is the standard protection classification required to prevent 99-100% of harmful UVA and UVB rays wavelengths of less than 400nm from entering your eyes.
- Stop smoking: Your general health affects your vision and eye health, and we all know that smoking affects general health. However, there is also evidence that smoking has specific effects on vision. Age-related macular degeneration appears to be worsened by smoking, as are a variety of other conditions affecting eye health. For example, nuclear cataracts are 2.9 times as common in smokers as in nonsmokers. Glaucoma is strongly associated with smoking, and the smoke itself is damaging to the eyes of smokers and others in the room.
- Working on computers: The London Hazards Centre finds that over 70 per cent of people working with computers experience visual problems. While there is no evidence that computers cause permanent damage, your comfort requires that you take special measures if you work at a computer all day. Every 20 minutes, look away from the screen and focus on an object 20 feet away
- Eye exams: Adults should have an eye exam at least every two years. An optometrist will check your eyesight and will also look for signs of eye disease. Early diagnosis provides a better chance of successful medication or other treatment.
