What’s Involved in an Eye Test

There are over 100 different tests to pinpoint your specific eye care needs. Since the eye often gives signs of other health care issues, your eye exam can also catch health problems that may need monitoring.

• Test of Visual Acuity: How well can you see and focus on an image from a distance? This is the test that gives us the phrase “20/20 vision.” If you can see an object at 20 feet which most people can see at 20 feet, you have 20/20 vision. If you can only see objects at 20 feet which can usually be seen from 40 feet away, then you have 20/40 vision, and we can fit you with lenses that will make it easier for you to conduct your daily life.

 

• Retinoscopy: A retinoscope will shine light into your eye, and our trained professionals will observe the resulting reflection from your retina. The optometrist will make a direct visual examination of your retina and use this information to gauge the refractive condition of the retina. This test shows nearsightedness, farsightedness, and other conditions.

 

• Ophthalmoscopy: An exam with the opthalmoscope gives information about the health of the retina, optic disc, choroid, and blood vessels. This test can also uncover diabetes, glaucoma, brain tumours, and other health problems.

 

 

 

• Tonometry: The fluid pressure inside the eye is measured in this test. This measurement is an essential test for glaucoma, a common disorder which affects the optic nerve and can cause loss of vision. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the UK, but it can now be treated, so testing for it is an essential part of health care.

 

• Visual field: When you look directly ahead, you can still see a bit at the side, above, and below the area where you’re focusing. Tests of this peripheral vision can find blind spots and other abnormalities, which may indicate diseases of the eye, or eye and brain disorders.
